Who is Jack Romanov?
Jack Romanov is a rather odd name for a racehorse, but that’s exactly what this horse has been called! Jack is Champion Jumper of the year 2016 tied with Sea King and he’s fast made a name for himself on the New Zealand and global racing circuit. The eight-year-old gelding is by Ustinov and has a number of wins under his belt as defending champion of the Pakaruga Hunt Challenge, which he conceded on 2016 to newcomer Kick Back.
Don’t Write Him Off Yet
The eight-year-old gelding may be old school compared to newcomers such as Kick Back, but his trainer has urged punters not to write him off yet. He had a fabulous schooling day at Ellerslie, showing that despite his age he is surprisingly fit and ready to take on the younger crowd.
Jack has only raced three times since his win at Ellerslie over 6400 meters, with one of that beig in the 2016 2017 season. His second at the Pakuranga Hunt Cup has earned the gelding some rest, but he is by no means ready to retire states his owner and trainers. The gelding has had a long career, with seven wins from 37 starts, which began in 2011. He has won big races such as the Great Northern Steeplechase.
Great Northern Steeplechase
To date Jack Romanov’s best win has been at the great Northern Steeplechase in 2015. He took on an incredibly strong field, settling at the back of the pack much to the consternation of his trainer and owner. After a long chase against Snodropdhtwinkletoes and Amanood Lad, the bay gelding ended up winning by a huge 16 lengths. The resulting excitement was purportedly the biggest ever seen at Ellerslie, with ex-Chiefs rugby player Dave Duley, who jumped up and down for the entire length of the run home. The screaming reached crescendo pitch as their hero ran away from the rest of the field, leaving them trailing disconsolately in his wake.
Jack was ridden by mark Brooks, who is a past show jumper. His father, Roger Brooks is a trainer himself and the pair of them had yet to have a winning Northern Steeplechase horse. Jack proved to be their first one, hopefully of many.
Jack Romanov is by Ustinov who was born in 1998, and stands at stud in New Zealand. He has an incredibly good pedigree, siring jumps as well as flat horses. Ustinov’s sire one of the best sires in the United States and a direct son of Mr Prospector.
Jack Romanov’s dam line includes the coveted Danehill Danzig bloodline, as well as the well-known winning mare Balmerino. Balmerino has won a number of flat races before being retired to have a number of foals, some of which have proved successful on both flat and over jumps. Colmerino was bought at the New Zealand National Broodmare sale by Waikato stud, which has been responsible for breeding a number of champions. They are best known for their flat racing bloodstock, but have a few jumpers including Jack Romanov.
